On the evening of July 24, 2013, a high-speed train was traveling from Madrid to Ferrol, in northwest Spain. The train never made it to its scheduled destination. On a curve just 4 kilometers outside of the railway station at Santiago de Compostela, the train derailed. All thirteen cars left the tracks. Four cars overturned. 143 people were injured. 79 died as a result of the accident. It was Spain’s worst railway accident in 40 years.

Four days later, the train’s driver was charged with 79 counts of homicide by professional recklessness and multiple counts of causing injury by professional recklessness. The train was driven by an employee of Spain’s national rail company who had 30 years’ experience.

When the train’s driver was questioned initially about the accident, he had no explanation. After further investigation, it was determined that there were four signals, spaced along the train’s route, which had been signaling a need to reduce speed.

All of the signals had been ignored.

This great tragedy that affected so many lives could have been avoided if the train’s driver had only recognized and responded appropriately to the signals along the way. These signals had been designed to help guide drivers to avoid danger and to complete their journeys safely, but in this case, these signals had all been ignored.

Similarly, signals also frequently appear along the path of your life’s journey. Some signals indicate a need to stop and reevaluate or change course. Some are warnings. Some indicate a need for correction. Other signals may indicate that you are on the right path, even if it may not seem so to you. Others may indicate opportunities for incredible blessing and advancement. Still others may give you direction about how to best interact with others who cross your path. Are these signals being heeded or ignored? Do you even recognize these signals when they appear?

God frequently sends signals to help guide us to avoid destructive problems and to ensure meaningful, rewarding journeys through life that we could never have experienced on our own without His help.

As Jesus said, “I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows]” (John 10:10 AMP).

When the signals are recognized and responded to appropriately, people are protected and guided on fulfilling and rewarding journeys. But when the signals are not recognized, or not heeded, unnecessary tragedies can result, much like the journeys of trains.

Some of God’s signals are warnings to protect us from destructive consequences. Other signals may prompt us to be alert and take action to avoid missing out on tremendous blessings that are being made available to us. So many people miss out on amazing and wonderful benefits in life simply because they didn’t believe these benefits were available, and didn’t respond to the signals that God provided to position them to receive these benefits.

But as we learn to recognize and respond appropriately to God’s signals in life, we will avoid destructive consequences and experience more of the abundant lives that Jesus came to give us.
